What is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese modality that helps create a relaxed state in the body allowing for a decrease in overall stress, bringing balance back so that our bodies can once again self-regulate and self-heal. Reiki can be done in person, or by distance.
How does Reiki work?
To understand how Reiki works, it is important to touch on the autonomic nervous system, which is composed of the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system is a stress response known as fight or flight response. On the other hand, the parasympathetic nervous system, known as the rest and digest response, acts to bring the body into a state of balance. When this system is activated, the fight or flight response dissipates, and our body returns to a more relaxed state. Reiki activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which allows the body to self-regulate and self-heal. When the body is in a balanced state it is much easier to overcome stress, illness, trauma, surgery, immune system dysfunction and chronic illness.
What does a Reiki session look like?
At this time, I only offer pre-recorded distant Reiki sessions. At the beginning of the session, I set the intention for the recipient to receive the Reiki energy. I use your name and any information that you want to share with me about your intentions for the session. Once I begin, the Reiki energy will flow to where it is needed the most in your body. All you need to do is make sure that you are in a comfortable place where you can relax uninterrupted during the duration of your Reiki session.
What does Reiki feel like?
Every Reiki session is unique. Some people describe the feeling much like a deeply meditative state, some people fall asleep and report being in a dream like state, others feel a warm sensation or experience a chill as the energy starts moving. Other people experience a sense of deep peace. Some people have reported that they revisit memories from the past and release energies connected to those memories that became stagnant within their body. Reiki is a gentle energy that will never bring forth self-healing that you are not ready for. As we continue to allow Reiki to flow into our lives, the self-healing may progress to deeper layers of our body and our spirit, but it will remain gentle, slowly moving stagnant energy so that we can regain balance on a much deeper level. After a reiki session you will likely feel very relaxed and peaceful, perhaps in a reflective state as you recall the sensations that were felt during the session. Other people feel energetic and motivated with a sense of clarity. Every session is unique to each person and their own personal journey.
Reiki and sound meditation:
In my reiki sessions, you have the option to add sound instruments to your session. Or you can opt for a sound meditation session with no Reiki. During sound meditation different instruments are played, which create different tones, vibrations and sound frequencies. These vibrations help to bring the body into a deeply meditative state, which can be a great compliment to Reiki, or can be enjoyed on its own. Examples of instruments you may hear include sound bowls, singing bowls, meditative drums, bells, tuning forks, and rain sticks.
Who can benefit from Reiki?
Everyone can benefit from Reiki. Even if your body is in a perfect state of regulation, Reiki will help your body maintain that level of function by keeping the body balanced through stressful times. Reiki can help with emotional and physical balance for people dealing with pain, anxiety, stress, chronic health conditions, sleep issues, emotional trauma, or those who are making lifestyle changes. Reiki can be helpful to anyone going through treatments that are stressful to the body, including before and after surgery, procedures, or injuries. Reiki is a great compliment but should not replace traditional medical appointments, treatments and advice from medical professionals. Please speak with your medical professional if you are usure if Reiki is right for you.
I have facilitated reiki sessions for people who want to relax and rebalance their energy and boost their immune system, people who have gone through trauma, loss, surgery, sport injuries, sleep issues and chronic illness.
